Clare had spent
thirty years in a wide variety of operations and executive responsibilities in a corporate 25 company. Starting out as an
engineer with GTE(now Verizon), Clare became a construction foreman early on, a job he still favors, and held a variety of
other management assignments before becoming a division operations manager. In 1979 he was named Vice-President for GTE Northwest
with responsibilities for public and governmental affairs. In 1986 Clare was named to a similar position in GTE North, a subsidiary
of 28,000 employees, three times the size of his previous assignment. Clare took on the challenge of not only leading the
North business unit but led GTE's management of change initiative. That work became the cornerstone of his strategic consulting
practice when he left GTE in 1994. His strategic consulting practice has included such clients as PacifiCorp, NALCO, Covance,
STI Inc., Onex Corporation, State of Indiana, the Indianapolis Urban League and other non-profits. In February
1999 Clare became the Chief Operation Officer of the law firm Sommer Barnard. In the ensuing years, using the Spirit in Leadership
philosophy, the firm doubled in size, partner compensation grew, turnover was reduced from a high of 51% to 8%, productivity
increased by 50% and employee attitude measurements were 85-90% favorable. That work is chronicled in the Journal of Organizational
Excellence. Clare is national speaker on strategic employee matters.
